Osram Compact Fluorescent Dulux T/E 32W-41

In 1993 a further miniaturisation of the compact fluorescent lamp took place, with the introduction of triple-turn lamps having six parallel limbs. It is not certain which manufacturer took the lead, but Philips listed its PL-T lamps in 18W and 26W ratings in 1993, and GE also announced the launch of its Biax T for the 4th quarter of 1993. Osram appears to have introduced this Dulux T lamp in 1994. All three of these leading manufacturers agreed the electrical and mechanical standards prior to commercialisation, hence all employ the same caps and ballasts with similar lengths.

One of the challenges accompanying the triple-turn lamps is the high concentration of energy in a small volume, leading to elevated temperatures in compact luminaires. Philips PL-T lamps are relatively immune to this thanks to their amalgam dose which maintains high light output over a wide range. However, for the Osram lamps, the 'cold ears' in the corners of the U-bends were found to run too hot. This was overcome in the present lamp by forming a deeper bend - this technique having been applied earlier on the highly loaded Dulux S 13W and Dulux D 26W, and the American Double-Dulux 13W. With the advent of Dulux T types, the cross-section of the discharge path around the bends was also changed to a pear shape, to further lower the cold spot temperature in the corners.

It was ultimately found that even with the pear-shape bends this lamp ran too hot in many luminaires, and by 1996 Osram offered a secondary range of the Dulux T/IN types. They feature an indium amalgam to maintain the mercury vapour pressure and lamp efficacy constant over a much wider range of ambient temperatures.
